So long, old friend.
Seems like it was getting increasingly difficult for the theater to operate, with Arclight now premiering many of the same indie films about a mile down the road. Still, Sundance Kabuki is going to take over the old Sunset 5 space in Spring 2012.

Movies I saw here:
Thumbsucker (alone)
The Proposition (with my Dad)
The first 10 minutes of Silver City before I walked out with Matt Wyatt
Wind That Shakes the Barley (with a good friend and an ex-girlfriend)
The Room (with many good friends)
And probably ten more films. Good times.

At this theater, I met David Cross, Spike Jonze, and The Room’s Lisa. RIP.

I saw The Room here way too many times in college. Fare thee well, Sunset 5!

A theatre that introduced me to so many of my favorites: Don Hertzfeldt, Hayao Miyazaki, Mike White, Tommy Wiseau, just to name a few. Farewell, buddy and thanks for the inspiration.

Major bummer. This place was great. Sure it smelled bad, the seats were uncomfortable, the popcorn was shitty, and the ushers were rude, but dammit, they played some good movies occasionally, and I saw a ton of shit there. Where will monthly Room screenings be from now on? I haven’t seen it in years, but it’s still really popular, right?

Thanks to this theater I met John Cameron Mitchell and then accidentally saw him peeing at a urinal when I was sitting on a toilet. If that doesn’t make this place an LA landmark, then I don’t know what does.
